Strategic Resources, Strategic Leadership: Mining in Latin America
Roque Benavides is one of Latin America’s most influential mining leaders and the Chairman of the Board of Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, a major Peruvian precious metals and resources producer. Buenaventura was the first Latin American mining company to list on the NYSE and holds a significant portfolio of mining rights across Peru, including interests in gold, silver, copper, and zinc assets. Benavides began his career with Buenaventura in 1977 and has held key leadership roles over more than four decades, including CFO and CEO, before becoming Chairman of the Board in 2011. He has also served in prominent industry and business leadership positions, including President of the National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (CONFIEP) and the Peruvian Mining, Oil and Energy Association (SNMPE). An engineer by training, Benavides also holds an MBA, and completed management programs at Harvard Business School and Oxford University. He is also actively involved in academia, teaching mining business management and strategy courses, and serving on multiple boards including those of major financial and industrial institutions in Peru.
